Happy Kids

I always thought that once my kids started getting older they wouldn’t want homemade stuff as much.  Maybe that will be true in a few more years but my seven-year old still beams when I make him something.  This week I stitched up four Crayon Folio’s and all three of my big kids loved them.  I’ll make one for the littlest dude when he learns not to color on everything!

IMG_6625The Crayon Folio pattern is by Gingercake and it’s also a part of the Sew Fab Bundle happening for just a couple of more days.

IMG_6627 IMG_6623 Crayon FolioI honestly don’t know why I’ve never sewn a crayon or art folio before.  They are all over the place and they make so much sense!  As soon as I saw this pattern as part of the Sew Fab Bundle I knew I would make it.  In the last year my kids have gotten so much more into drawing and coloring and I’m all over any kind of easy to take along item to keep them entertained during appointments, swimming lessons, etc.

IMG_6630

I made a woodland themed one for my boys.  They both love to draw pictures of birds, specifically any kind of birds of prey so they’ve all ready taken them outside looking for animals to draw.

IMG_6632 Crayon FolioGingercake’s Crayon Folio pattern also comes with a bonus pattern, a mini folio which would be great to keep in your purse.

Here’s a little more about the Sew Fab Sale if you haven’t already heard about it!

For one week only, you can have nineteen patterns (plus a fun bonus pattern), chosen specifically for this sale, for only $29.95!  That’s over 80% off the retail value of the bundle!

Buy It Now

If you’ve never sewn with a PDF pattern before, let me tell you how great it is! After downloading your pattern, you will print out the pattern itself, creating pattern tiles, if you will. Simply tape the tiles together to create the full pattern! At that point you can cut out the size that you need and pin the paper pattern directly to your fabric, or you can trace the pattern size that you need onto sewing paper or tracing paper and cut it out, saving the paper pattern for later when you need to sew another size. PDF patterns are so convenient because you can print them out as many times as you need!

Now for the part you’ve been waiting for… the patterns!

A collection of 19 PDF Patterns from 19 well-known and up and coming designers are instantly accessible to you by PDF download upon purchase of the Sew Fab Pattern Bundle. Imagine all of the combinations that you can put together with this bundle of patterns, with many transitioning to fall and winter as well! Here are the patterns that you will receive (click on the links below the collage for more information about each pattern.):

Long Beach Shorts

Long Beach ShortsA couple of weeks ago I pulled out my older boys’ summer clothes only to realize that ninety percent of their shorts are now too small.  Thankfully shorts are a really quick and easy sew and the Long Beach Shorts from Terra’s Treasures are no exception.

Long Beach Shorts Long Beach ShortsI love the flat front of these and the piping on the back is a really great detail.  Brayer loves them and Kaed is patiently waiting for a pair for himself.

I used some fabric I picked up years ago, literally.  I had always planned to make shorts out of it but never got around to it.  When I saw the Long Beach Shorts pattern I knew it was time to cut into it.IMG_6360 IMG_6356 Long Beach ShortsThe Long Beach Shorts are a part of the Sew Fab Pattern Bundle. That Time I Sewed a Jacket

Jacket

You totally can’t tell, by the snow that is currently falling from the sky, but we’ve actually had a few nice spring days in the past couple of weeks.  This prompted me to start thinking about maybe, possibly, sewing myself a spring jacket.IMG_6303

It’s a project I’ve wanted to try for a while but put it off for many reasons.  I was sure I would make a major mistake or finish the project and have it not fit properly, both bad news when the project calls for close to 6 yards of fabric in total.IMG_6300

This was not aided by the fact that I used all organic cotton for the project.  Despite my fears I went ahead and bought a pattern and fabric and did it.  And it turned out great.  It fits great, I made no big mistakes, and I’m really happy with the whole process. IMG_6294

I used Amy Butler’s Rainy Days Runabout Jacket  for the pattern.  The pattern calls for laminated cotton but I was going for more of a dress coat then a rain jacket so I used an organic cotton twill from Fabric.com and a cute polka dot organic cotton for the lining.  The weight turned out perfect and the fabric is so nice.
IMG_6289 JacketI only did a couple things different from the pattern.  I attached the belt a little differently and I used wood buttons instead of making my own covered ones.

If I make this jacket again I’ll do it in a another color and add some pockets to the lining.

My only challenge now is to keep the coat clean!

Kara Tote Sewing Pattern Release

Cover KTote

I finished it! The Kara Tote PDF Sewing Pattern is finished and ready for purchase!  I sent it out to pattern testers on Sunday and a couple of them were so fast at getting back to me I was able to get the pattern up for sale much faster than I had hoped.

2014 02 07_0561_edited-1This is one of my favorite bags.  I’ve been making it for years and it has always been a best seller in my Etsy Shop.

Some of my testers sent in some gorgeous pictures of their Kara Tote.  Erin of Diedelbug Handmade made this amazing bag.

kara tote Kara tote2I love how she switched up the fabric on the straps and handles.

The Kara Tote Sewing Pattern is available for sale in my Etsy Shop as well in my Craftsy Shop.

More Kids Clothes Week Sewing

A few months ago I splurged and bought some Liberty of London Hello Kitty fabric.  Ara is a big Hello Kitty fan and I’ve always wanted to buy some Liberty of London fabric so I figured it was just meant to be.

Hello Kitty DressToday I finally cut into it and sewed up a dress for my girl for this coming Summer.  I might have to find a cardigan and some leggings for her to wear with it though because she has her heart set on wearing it to church this coming Sunday.

Hello Kitty DressI used a simple dress pattern I had and added a strip of ruffled fabric with lace.  I wanted something simple but pretty and I’m happy with the result.  I still have just over one yard left and I’m thinking a tiered skirt for the last of the fabric.

2014 01 31_00152014 01 31_0068_edited-1I also figured it wasn’t Kids Clothes Week without adding another Bimaa to my kids’ collection so Lachlan got himself a new hoodie too.

2014 01 31_0048_edited-1The moose knit is from Girl Charlee.  I bought one of their slightly flawed bundles so I have yards and yards of this stuff.  Both my older boys want a shirt just like Lachlan’s though so I’m confident it will all get used.  The brown knit and ribbed knit were both in my stash.

Moose Bimaa2014 01 31_0047_edited-1 2014 01 31_0050_edited-1 2014 01 31_0076_edited-1My little dude is long and skinny so I made his Bimaa in a 2T.  He has lots of room left in the sleeves and it’s nice and long on him which I love.

Moose BimaaAfter attempting to photograph my kiddos all week indoors I’m seriously looking forward to Spring and being able to get back outside to photograph.

Honeycomb Dress + Fancy Pants Leggings

Yesterday I stitched up three new dresses and a pair of leggings.  I let Ara pick which dress she wanted to keep for herself and she went for the honeycomb print.  That’s my girl.

Blog 062I recently bought a few too many gorgeous prints in lovely organic cotton so I knew I had to get some dresses made.

Blog 0791This dress is my favorite for a couple of reasons.  It slips on and off really easily. It looks great with skinny jeans or leggings underneath or a long sleeve tee on cold days.  It’s also just perfect for a breezy dress in the summer.  The last couple of years my girl has grown up but not out so I love it when a dress works as a tunic style with pants when it starts getting too short.

Blog 088 Blog 106I really love this print too.  The birds are just gorgeous and the colors are perfect.  It’s another really great organic cotton, soft and sturdy with a really smooth feel to it.

Blog 045 Blog 054The last dress I stitched up is from a really pretty vintage print I picked up at a thrift store last week.  I’m guessing it’s a cotton/poly blend.  Really light weight.

Blog 091I also sewed up some solid gray Fancy Pants Leggings by Titchy Threads in an organic cotton jersey.  I’m definitely ordering more of this fabric in other colors.  The quality and feel of it is amazing.  I ordered this one from fabric.com as well as the bird and honeycomb fabric but it looks like they are all sold out of all three!

I’ve written about the Fancy Pants Leggings before but I’ll say it again that I love this pattern.  This is my third pair I’ve made and I’ll make many more in the future.

The dress pattern is a very altered version of a pattern by Too Sweets Patterns.  I don’t see the pattern available for sale anymore but the Pockets are Best Dress looks pretty close to what I altered the original Best Bubble Dress to.

Blog 092I think I’m doing pretty good for the Kids Clothes Week so far but I have a few more projects in mind.

Reversible Zippy Hoodie

Blog 035I finally did it.  I sewed a garment with a zipper in it.  It’s one of those things I’ve been putting off for no real reason other than it was learning a new skill.  I’ve sewn with zippers a ton just never in clothes before and let me tell you, it’s NOT that hard.

Blog 027It helps that I picked a pattern with seriously amazing instructions.  I used the Reversible Zippy Hoodie pattern by Kitschy Coo and I was really impressed.  It was one of those rare times when I sewed something brand new and didn’t stop at some point completely confused.

Blog 028My goal was to make Brayer a really warm hoodie.  I picked an extra thick sherpa fleece from Fabricland and lined it with a cotton jersey I think I got at a thrift store.  The result is a warm hoodie that is warm through the body and the sleeves.  I’m I the only one who gets annoyed when hoodies are lined through the body and not the sleeves?

Blog 033Brayer loves it. I loved sewing it and the end result is a high quality sweater that cost me under $10.  I’m happy.
