This year we had yet another great hunting trip in Saskatchewan. We had fantastic weather, good company, and good hunting. This year was especially great because I actually managed to get a few hunts in. There are definitely some perks to not having any more babies breastfeeding or on the way!
I even managed to bag a few birds! This was my second goose and first snow so I was pretty stoked.
I’ve always thoroughly enjoyed the bush aspect of big game hunting but I can’t say I complained about sitting in one place, watching the sun rise or set, with my coffee mug and camera. Watching the massive flocks of geese fly overhead was just as amazing as actually putting a few of them in the freezer.
We also did a bunch of duck hunting. Duck hunting was a lot of fun with the kids. They loved to run and get the ducks once it was safe.
Since we’ve been home we’ve had several requests to skip school and go duck hunting instead. I think one of these days we’ll just have to do it.
We turned nearly all those ducks and geese into sausage. It’s fantastic.
*You may want to avoid this post if you’re not keen on photos of animals that will end up in our freezer and later the cook pot. This post was supposed to go up a few weeks ago. When the hunt was still relevant and fresh in my mind but I’m just barely coming out of the swamp that is Baby Bootie season in my Etsy Shop so it’s late. Very late.
This past October we drove out to where Travis grew up to do some Duck and Goose Hunting for the second time. It’s become one of those trips that is fun for so many reasons. One we get to visit with my inlaws, two we get to do some hunting, and three we get to fill the freezer a little bit more.
It’s an all around good time. The kids really enjoy the whole hunting experience and I really enjoy the opportunity to get out as well. I even got out once or twice without any kids thanks to Grandma!
The Geese were migrating while we were there and seeing the massive flocks was pretty incredible.
On top of all the ducks and geese we saw there were lots of antelope to be found and even a very large badger one night.
We had a very succesful week of hunting and turned all those birds into various kinds of very tasty sausage.
